Custom Made Sofas

Custom made sofas – designed & built

Sometimes, when looking to invest in a new sofa for your home, you’re not able to find a sofa that ticks all your boxes. Common considerations when buying a new sofa are the size, design, fabric colour, comfort and quality. You may find something you like, but it just doesn’t fit; or perhaps the colour is not your cup of tea. Maybe you’re worried you’re not getting the quality you deserve for the money you’re paying – enter custom made sofas.

Custom made sofas is built to your exact requirements, as a one-off bespoke piece of handmade furniture that you could not find in a shop. At Hill Upholstery & Design we can help you develop your ideas and turn them into reality.

How much does it cost to design and build a custom-made sofa?

Each project is different, but as a guide the custom made sofas in these pictures cost £3,400 with a fabric from a Sanderson range. The cost reflects the fact that the item is a totally bespoke, handmade piece of furniture made by a master craftsman to our customer’s individual requirements. We took her ideas and needs and then designed and built the sofa using only quality materials. This customer was very happy with the finished piece. But don’t take our word for it, scroll down and read the feedback we received.

What makes a quality sofa?

Like so many things in life, a strong foundation is the key to success and the same goes for your piece of furniture. Your sofa will be made with solid hardwood frames and all joints are screwed, glued and doweled to ensure your sofa is strong and built to last.

The quality of your cushion interiors makes a real difference as to whether your sofa’s appearance is in for the long haul. Whether foam, fibre, feathers or a mix of them all, we only use the best to ensure longevity. We’d always recommend Reflex foam cushions for the seat interiors to give you nothing less than superb quality and a comfortable seat – with a range of different densities and grades to suit your comfort preference and desired look of your custom-made sofa.

We have access to numerous upholstery fabric and leather suppliers, giving you a wide choice of material to choose. Whether you are looking for something traditional, a more contemporary design or perhaps the most important factor to you is that it will be easy to clean then we can find something to suit. All of our recommended upholstery fabric will meet a minimum of 25,000 rubs on the Martindale rub test. This is a test carried out to ensure fabrics are suitable for upholstery use in terms of wear and tear. And you can also be assured that all materials adhere to the UK standards for flammability.

I’d like a custom-made sofa, what do I do now?

The initial step would be to get in touch and tell us your ideas. We need to understand exactly what you like and what you don’t like. Start to collate photos or clippings of the looks you like, think about colours and fabric that you’ve seen, consider the size of the space the custom made sofa needs to fit in and how much you want to spend. Who uses your sofa and how is it used? Are you looking for a sofa to put your feet up on, or perhaps it needs to have a high back to accommodate the taller person?

All of these issues come into play when designing a custom-made sofa. When you’re ready, Scott or Helen will have a conversation with you to go through what you’re looking to achieve and what is most important to you about your new sofa.

From our conversations, we would then provide you with a sketch of how we envisage it will look and make suggestions on the finer details that make up your sofa. From the cushion type and the fabric itself to the finishing details, whether that be a deep buttoned back or maybe scatters – the choice is yours and you’ll receive our guidance along the way.

Our workshop and office is based in Fobbing which is in Stanford Le Hope, Essex – you are always welcome to come and meet our team of Essex upholsterers and the administration team that are involved in making your furniture. Stop for a coffee and why not meet the cows on the farm where our office is based! Although based in Essex, we offer upholstery services in London and surrounding areas too if required.

How long will it take before I receive my fabulous new sofa?

On final approval of the design, fabric and measurements and receipt of deposit, we’ll get to work in our Essex workshop and within an approximate lead time of 6-8 weeks you’ll receive your custom-made sofa. Your unique piece of furniture will be delivered to your home by our upholsterers who will also put the sofa in its rightful place, ensure the cushions are plumped, brushed down and looking great. In the days that follow, you’ll receive a care guide detailing how to maintain your sofa so you can sit back and relax for many years to come.
